The 112 Meditations · Sound

Intoning a sound into silence

Chant a long, slow sound such as Om, and follow it as it fades into silence.

The teaching, in plain words

Intone a sound slowly, such as Om. As the sound becomes quieter and finer, until it is only silence, let your attention go with it.

From the Vigyan Bhairava Tantra

How to practice

  1. Sit comfortably upright and take a full breath in.
  2. On the out-breath, chant a long, slow "Om", or any open vowel sound such as "Ah".
  3. Let the sound grow gradually softer toward the end of the breath.
  4. Afterwards, sit in the silence and feel the vibration settle.
  5. Repeat a few times, letting each sound be quieter than the last, until you simply sit in silence.

Any long, open sound works. The word is less important than following the sound into the silence after it.
